Project: Workspace - Part 1

My goals in this project are to create a beautiful space, have a system for organizing all of the topics I am interested in pursuing, and get rid of things I don't need to keep.

I have so many things I am interested in doing that I need to first organize a space and create systems that facilitate the pursuit of my projects. My husband and I rent a three bedroom house, so we each have our own room in addition to the bedroom. My room, which I lovingly call 'my study,' looks more like a giant junk drawer right now. It's filled with half-done projects, unread books, and piles of random papers. This is how I'm going to fix it.

Goals

My goals in this project are to create a beautiful space, have a system for organizing all of the topics I am interested in pursuing, and get rid of things I don't need to keep.

Beauty is highly important here. I want to create a room that is as beautiful as it can be so that I have a place that draws me in and inspires me to be there. To that end, I plan on painting the walls, making a wall of bookshelves, and organizing all the crafts, books, and papers I have lying around in a logical and beautiful way.

Systematizing my interests is key here, too. Inspired by a book by Barbara Sher called Refuse to Choose, I will create binders labelled with every topic, and add in notes, readings, and any other resource of interest. I'm buying library labels to organize my books, probably with the Dewey decimal system, or maybe a personalized system that corresponds to the things I'm interested in and the aforementioned binders.

Finally, I need to really think about what I want to keep, and what I need to let go. I need to donate or sell all the things that don't interest me, or have no purpose in my pursuits. Shedding the unimportant will open space for the important.

Due Date

I estimate this project will take a few months to complete. The easiest thing will be going through and getting rid of stuff I don't need. The thing that will take the longest is making the bookshelves (see Project: Woodworking). I'm going to say that by June 1, 2022, I will be able to call this project complete.
